NJT Prepares Workforce for the Twenty First Century

New Jersey Transit launched its state-of-the-art eLearning Training Center on October 22, 2009 at their Meadows Maintenance Complex in Kearny, New Jersey, with a ribbon cutting ceremony and an official dedication by New Jersey Transit Executive Director Richard Sarles. The eLearning Training Center was established to enhance the skills of New Jersey Transit's rail maintenance staff and is a collaborative effort between New Jersey Transit and Bombardier's Technology Solutions group.

"Our new eLearning program gives us world-class tools, and the flexibility to meet the demands of our business while enhancing the skills of our people," stated Tom Rutkowski, New Jersey Transit's General Superintendent — Equipment and Shops.

Administered by New Jersey Transit, the eLearning Training Center operates with a turn-key eLearning solution from Bombardier. The eLearning solution includes a fully hosted Learning Management System with an expanding roster of courses created by Bombardier’s Technology Solutions group to improve the reliability and uptime of specific fleets of electric locomotives and new MultiLevel passenger cars built by Bombardier. Course topics include "An Introduction to Electrical Systems" and "Wheel Inspections", with more soon to be released.

According to Keith Sheardown, General Manager of Bombardier's Technology Solutions team, "eLearning is helping to transform employee development at New Jersey Transit with fully interactive and immersive content, a flexible training platform that is accessible 24/7, optimized training documentation and enhanced regulatory compliance."

While developing the eLearning solution, New Jersey Transit and Bombardier worked with a pilot group of students at the Meadows Maintenance Complex. The pilot students embraced the eLearning initiative enthusiastically. "All of our people and our unions have been extremely supportive," confirms Tom Rutkowski.

At the New Jersey Transit eLearning Center's dedication ceremony, Bob Lavall, New Jersey Transit's Deputy General Manager of Equipment declared, "This is a great day for NJ Transit. Our new eLearning Training Center is another step toward our goal of advancing employee development, with courses that are being embraced by our staff. We have raised the bar on our training program, and that will result in improved equipment reliability and performance."
